Some white people tan because they believe having a golden brown skin or darker complexion is more beautiful. A swarthy complexion makes their make-up, clothing and appearance overall look better. Notice how the tanner your skin as a white person is, the more confidence you have and the more appealing you look to others, especially the opposite sex.

Fish belly white is unappealing and makes some look sickly as many believe. So a nice tan to them means more attractive and healthy looking. Then there are some whites who like to befriend and hang out with American Indians and want to blend in so they go for the darkest tan they can get so they can say ‘I am part Indian too, my great grandmother was a Cherokee princess’ It makes us really laugh.

My girlfriend and I are very pale and we don’t tan. I never really understood this either. I guess a tan from natural exposure makes sense, but I don’t understand why a person of any skin color would want to bake their skin. The evidence of links between UV exposure and skin cancer just makes it more puzzling to me.

Why not? I personally don’t bake myself, but I like a little color.. the “non ghost” stage as I call it… and living in Florida if you spend any time outside, which I do you tan anyways…

Most “white” people realize it’s suicidal to actively tan and they wear hats and lots of sunscreen. As someone who has suffered numerous bouts of melanoma and has never tried to get a tan, I assume it’s because you can’t quite avoid the sun completely. It’s no coincidence that pale complected people in the US sunbelt, Africa, Australia and places like that have EXTRAORDINARY rates of death from skin cancer. Blacks can also get skin cancer by the way. Bob Marley died of it.
