Why are so many white men and women fascinated with blond hair? A lot of women I work with claim to be natural blonds, though they are obviously not (dark roots showing). As far as I can tell, the only blonds I’ve seen are white children. From what I can tell, blonds are something to be desired, and brunettes aren’t. Why?

This was brought up in a book I’m in the middle of reading: Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty by Nancy L. Etcoff. I’m sorry I can’t remember exactly what the “answer” was and I don’t have the book with me. But you might want to check it out.

My preference for blondes is because blond women have finer body hair. Also, I am blond, and I like it!

What’s been conspicuously left out of the answers is the veiled racist undertone of this preference – that blond is perceived as “more white” and thus supposedly more attractive. One person said lightness is always perceived as more attractive. Not so. Light or pale skin has often been perceived as unhealthy by most cultures, such as traditional African, American Indian, etc. Perceiving lightness as the most beautiful is most common where colonialism has left its mark.

I asked my 82-year-old dad this question once. He told me it was because blondes were considered to be the “whitest of the white.”

I’m a straight white male with a STRONG preference for brunettes, also redheads. I know from experience that I’ve never clicked with a blonde woman, whether natural or bleached. Contrary to stereotype, in my experience, they are rather sexless. This may be because blonde nationalities correlate with wealth in our society. Also in Europe the Germanic invaders who subjugated everyone else were fairer, hence the stereotype that blonde = upper class, which persists today. I have little sympathy or liking for wealthy people, and blonde women tend to be especially snobby because the blonde cult tells them they are better than everyone else. Dark-haired women often come from nationalities that value romance and passion, including Italians, Latins, and Native Americans. Brunettes, take heart! Some of us think y’all are the BEST!

I was one of those not-so-natural blondes for at least 9 years. I’m 28 years old. I actually thought that to look good or get attention I had to be blonde. I am very happily married, so I decided to get rid of the ‘cute blonde’ image. I took my hair back to it’s original brown and to my surprise received several compliments. Then I went to the tanning bed and got a really nice dark tan. Now, it seems like all of a sudden guys are hitting on me (even though I’m NOT interested). I don’t consider myself attractive so I’m not bragging. My point is: All this time I thought guys loved the blonde hair, but it seems to me they prefer dark hair and dark skin! Stay the way you are. Being different gives a sense of mystery. Be seductive, not another blonde clone.

Some women really do have naturally blond hair. My sister, who is 18, still has nearly white hair, and so did I until recent years. Now my hair is mainly a mixture of yellow and brown. If this has given me any advantage concerning men, I don’t honestly know. Non-Finnish men seem to prefer blondes, but I think this is only because they aren’t used to natural blondes. And everything new seems attractive, at least for a while. The main Finnish hair color varies from white/yellowish to dark brown/black.

Real blondes are hard to come by. I am a natural blonde, and many people say they would pay tons to have my hair color. You see so many real brunettes that you get tired of seeing them. You can tell when someone is a true blonde because their eyebrows are also blonde.

It’s not just whites who are attracted to blondes. And I have seen women of all ethnic backgrounds who bleach their hair. Blond hair is a recessive (gene) trait, and therefore is rare and unusual in most areas of the world, whereas brunettes are much more common. Anything rare becomes more valuable (attractive?) and gives cause for it to be copied. This happens with a lot of things. However, I agree with A.C.C that it is a cultural preference. I once considered living in the Middle East permanently and was politely informed by a member of my host family that it was not a good idea. You see, it would be very difficult for them to find a husband for me, as I was too fair, too thin, too tall and my hair was too unusual (blond). I think they were telling me I was too ugly – although by Western standards, I was considered attractive.

My theory is that because Blonde is somewhat of a rare color than people find it more attractive, like how someone would value or find interest in another scarce thing. Maybe this isnt expressed that bluntly but is could be a subconscious appreciation for a not usual attribute.

From a social psychological perspective, it is because blondes are actually fairly rare – even for white people (though you would never know it with all the fakes these days). The less available a thing is, the more people tend to want it (in this case men). Women dye their hair because they are desperate for male attention. The thing is, it usually works. The stereo -typed blond is generally ‘an easy lay.’ This actually holds truer for bleach blondes than true blondes since the whole reason they do it is to get attention (they wont admit this of course). So men go went for blonds because they were rare, they go for blonds because blond hair these days is like a big neon sign saying ‘I’ll do anything you want if only you pay attention to me!’ Red hair is even rarer than blond hair.

Maybe because there are so few natural blond adults, it is more desired. When something is rare, it is desired. I am a natural blond. Platinum blond when I was a child, and caramel/dishwater blond as an adult. (If someone were to ask my hair color, I couldn’t really say blond, but it also isn’t brown, it’s just lack of color) I think for some of these women, it’s hard to let go of part of their identity. They think of themselves as a blond, and when their hair no longer is, they need to restore that part of their identity. It’s brighter and nice looking. Some might be embarrassed that they feel the need to change their looks, so they lie about it. Sometimes the sun bleaches hair in the summer, leaving the roots looking darker. That can be mistaken for hair coloring.
