KristinaMemberA few days ago, my boyfriend and I received a note from the SPCA regarding an accusation of ‘cruelty and neglect’ towards our 3-month puppy because we had him in a cage when we were unable to watch him. This allegation was made by a so-called ‘guest’ of the house, most likely from one of the roommates, who knew nothing of us, nor how we care for OUR dog. Anyway, I got angered, because the same day I had heard that the Senate Republicans rejected a bill to be more strict on hate crimes (people killing one another because of what race, religion, etc. someone is). And it got me to thinking… there are more laws on the books to protect dogs, who are animals, than to protect blacks, who are human beings. How many animal rights activists that are of the white race see nothing wrong with how the cops brutally beat Rodney King, pull over innocent black men because of their race, use statistics and test scores to prove blacks have inferior intelligence (expressed by The Bell Curve, which at the time was on the bestseller list), etc., but are the first ones to scream cruelty when it comes to an animal’s ‘rights’ being violated? It is sickening to me, not because I feel the concept of animal rights is wrong, but because I think that blacks and other minorities should be held in an even higher regard when it comes to the law. If people can be so compassionate when it comes to animals (nature’s lesser creation) being harmed, why the heck they can’t feel so enraged when it comes to the rights of blacks being violated?
