Polly-SParticipantWhy do white people swim in the ocean when they know dangerous sea creatures lurk in there and it can kill them?

KCEMemberFor the same reason people go camping in the woods: to get closer to nature. You truly have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting attacked by something in the water (take it from a surfer). Just learn how to identify jellyfish or manowars, wear ‘footies’ so you don’t step on a stingray or coral or broken glass with bare feet, and don’t surf in areas with schooling fish, and you’ll be fine! Rip currents are actually more dangerous than any critter in the sea.

DanielParticipantSince when is swimming in the sea exclusive to white people? Have you been to the beach recently? How many shark attacks have there been this year? I don’t want to sound mean, but perhaps you should travel a little more and broaden your mind and perspectives.

John29207ParticipantThat’s a dumb question. That’s like asking ‘why do people live New York City when they know that air conditioners can fall on them?’ or Also Whites aren’t the only people who swim (Blacks and Latinos in the Caribbean, Pacific Islanders, basically any coastal population, provided that the water is at a comfortable temperature and not too rough. Of course, they stay vigilant for sharks and things. Maybe you’ve never been to the ocean, since you listed Kansas as your location. But if you were to go to the Jersey Shore in the summer, for example, ‘Jaws’ is not gonna come out and bite you. Some Whites, in particular, have taken to the sport of shark-feeding (from shark cages, of course). Like bears in the woods, this has caused sharks to make those areas as their feeding grounds, and thus their population in those areas increases. Like bears, this is possibly the only way they put humans on their menus.

AshleeParticipantDo black people not swim in the sea? It would never have occurred to me that they did not!

William24309ParticipantYou have never swam in the ocean? It may have more to do with you living in Kansas so far from the coast than race but there is nothing like it. I live in a coastal state and I promise you many black people enjoy it as much as I do.

steveParticipantI think the better title for this would be’why are black people afraid of the sea’ but not ALL blacks are afraid of the ocean but I have seen many who are deathly afraid like a shark is gonna get em the first time they swim.
