I have been wondering why there are no slurs directed at white males that are automatic “fighting words.” There are words or terms we are all familiar with that when spoken to blacks, Hispanics and women that will result in immediate hostility or lawsuits, and I understand why. However, there does not seem to be analogous slurs for white males that provoke the same level of universal negative response. I have heard some of the common terms for white males; honky, peckerwood, etc., and it’s kind of like so what – who cares? Just curious why this is so. Maybe I just haven’t heard the right ones yet to push my buttons.

Despite recent gains by women and minorities, the country is by and large still run by heterosexual white males. We don’t experience meaningful persecution because our brethren are usually the ones persecuting others. Neither as straight males nor as Caucasians is our group self-esteem ever really put on the line, so a taunt by someone from a less-dominant group is easy to brush off – unless we fear their anger might turn violent. No matter who is engaging in them, slurs and taunts usually reveal more about the person attacking than about the person being attacked.
