TheresaParticipantWhy does it seem that when white men try to talk to a black female, they have to get this fake, hip-hop wannabe feel across, with an Eminem undertone? Before you start jumping down my throat, I don’t mean every white male, just some. It seems to usually be the younger ones, but I have been approached by some older ones, too. Just talk to me like I am just any other girl. I don’t expect you to be Mr. Soul, but please, not the fake ‘brotha’ tone.

Jennifer R.ParticipantTheresa, I almost went into convulsions laughing about this! I have experienced this myself. I think it’s just a clumsy attempt, most of the time, at saying that they’re down with what they think you are, that they’re ‘not just another white guy.’ They think they have to act like that to attract you. Some may actually talk like that because that’s just the way they talk. Hip-Hop culture has grown very long arms. Go ahead and subtly correct them if you think the ‘accent’ is a put-on, but go easy.

Rick29852ParticipantThey’re probably insecure and immature. But, to be fair, I have witnessed black men talking to each other in Ebonics and then totally change when approaching a white female. So maybe it’s just an attempt to put the female at ease.
