On more than one occasion I have had white people — some total strangers — just reach up and touch my hair! I wear dreadlocks. They are clean, well-groomed and beautiful (at least I think they are). I find this extremely rude. Some have even seemed shocked that my hair is soft to the touch! I would never just touch a person’s person without asking first (or at least pre-warning them!). Other whites have fired questions at me about my hair, asking how I wash it, what I use to wash it with and all kinds of crazy things! I understand people’s natural curiosities but they need to understand how intrusive their questions can be. Perhaps find a way to be more tactful about solving the ‘mystery’ about us and our natural hairstyles?!
