Has anyone noticed that many black people back into their parking spaces, but most white people pull in headfirst? I have noticed this and wonder why.

My husband and I were at the mall last weekend, and I noticed that most of the black people were backing in to park. I asked my husband why he thought that was. He couldn’t believe that I would notice or wonder about such a thing. It’s nice to know I am not the only one.

When I stop and look at the situation, most people, be they white, black, Latino or whatever, pull in headfirst. Very few folks back into their parking spaces.

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed any particular difference among either racial or gender differences.

I asked a good friend of mine, who is black, about this, and he that the folks that he knew that backed in did it to conceal the license plate on the car. He said in the neighborhood that he grew up in, many people owned cars, but not everyone had current plates, so they would pass the good license plate around, put it on their car, and back in to make it harder for cops to run the plate, as the cops hated to get out of their car to look at it. He thinks that so many people have done that for so long, that the habit just spread to a lot of black folks that have never even lived in that situation, and they may have no idea that is the root of their own habit.
