Is it appropriate for white folks to wish black folks happy Kwanzaa? Or display Kwanzaa decorations? Or even celebrate Kwanzaa themselves? My 7 year old son asked me if we would be celebrating Kwanzaa this year and it just got me thinking. The core values Kwanzaa celebrates are great, and I want my kids to grow up seeing things African-American as no more alien to them than the Irish-American and Russian cultural input they get at home. I just don’t know if marking the event in our lily white family would seem ridiculous (or god forbid, disrespectful) to my black neighbors and co-workers, much less my son’s classmates.
