I often see guys walking around whistling a tune, but I rarely see a woman doing so. Why the difference?

Many women garner stares just by standing there. Whistling would only attract more attention. That, and the fact that your lipstick tends to crease when whistling.

It’s a skill that is encouraged in males and less so in females, at least historically. There was a saying that went ‘whistling girls and crowing hens never come to any good ends’–implying that it was an overly masculine skill. It was also more likely to be taught to boys by their fathers for use in calling a dog, signalling someone, or for use at sporting events (or harassing the girls). These days, only older people seem to disapprove of or even notice a woman whistling, at least in America, but the habit of attracting less attention and not being as big a show-off is still making it a less popular idle-time activity for women than men. …The funny thing is, I actually whistle better than anyone I know, male or female. It really surprises people, but to me it’s an acceptable form of breaking into song in public.

Most familes teach the young ladies that whistling is not attractive and unladylike. And seeing a woman whistle even if they were never taught that it was unladylike it looks a little odd
