[Ken-M26414]

My wife is Mexican. She was born in Laredo, Texas in the ’40’s. On her original birth certificate, under race, it says ‘white’. As I was raised in an all white Detroit suburb, there were also many kids in my school who were Arabic, Armenian, and Mexican, but we kids never thought of them as anything but ‘classmates’. Just when was it that Mexicans and other Latino heritages started calling themselves ‘brown’? It seems that at once, latinos both don’t want their skin color to be a factor in social status, yet make sure it is called into attention. In my personal recollection, not many European descended whites, if any, gave it a second thought until it was seemingly pushed into our faces. Ken M.
