MattParticipantSuppose the idea of race could abolished somehow. Suppose that it were possible to have a world where the differences that now define our ideas of distinct races were considered as trivial as the amount of freckles one has is considered today, and the idea that there were distinct races became regarded as an idea as outdated as the idea that the sun revolved around the earth. Would you like this to happen? Why or why not? I for one would like to see the idea of race abolished simply because the idea seems to cause so much trouble, arguing, and division, while providing little if any benefit. It seems like it is used, at best, as an inadequate shorthand for describing physical appearance, and at worst, a way to divide the world into ‘us’ and ‘them’ and exclude or discriminate against ‘them.’ And I don’t see much of any benefit to keeping the idea around. What’s your opinion on the idea of race? Useful, or an outdated idea which should be forgotten?
