Samara-CParticipantWhy do people exchange rings as a symbol of love for engagements and weddings? Why are the rings worn on the third finger of the left hand? And why is a diamond ring chosen for these occasions?

Stephen-SParticipantIn many cultures the circle is a symbol of eternity. The diamond, recognized as the hardest natural substance, can also be seen as eternal. These symbols — the ring and the diamond — signify the hope that the union will last forever. Of course, in a country where the divorce rate hovers around 50 percent, it is obvious that many people do not consider this symbolism when they get married. As for the third finger of the left hand . . . I don’t know where that came from. However, in some other cultures, it is different. Germans wear their wedding rings on the right hand, for example.

WilliamMemberA diamond is supposed to be the purest stone, and a gold band symbolizes a never-ending cycle of love. Also, gold is the one metal that never tarnishes or breaks down – no matter what elements attack it.

CrystalMemberWedding rings date back to the time of the ancient Romans, who exchanged rings as a ritual pledge of fidelity (and, for the woman, submission). The Romans believed a special vein ran from the third finger of the left hand directly to the heart, and that is the reason for the ring being placed on that finger. Finally, the first diamond engagement ring was given to Mary of Burgundy by Archduke Maximilian of Austria in the 15th century. However, diamond was never a common stone for engagement ring use until diamond mines were discovered in South Africa in the 19th century. The diamond companies then basically ‘pushed’ the diamond engagement ring, through advertising, as a way to get people to buy more diamonds.
