Rosemary B.ParticipantOver and over again I have noticed that my Caucasian sisters do not wash their hands after using the restrooms. Women, please, help me understand this one because my mother taught me the value of this very basic lesson at an early age. Why don’t Caucasian women wash their hands after using the lavatory?

EllenParticipantWashing hands isn’t a race thing at all. I wash my hands every time. Maybe their parents didn’t teach them as well as yours taught you. Maybe they don’t think they need to wash their hands. Who knows? All I know is it’s not a race or gender thing, it’s a personal thing. I know people who routinely use the toilet seat covers and open the bathroom door with a paper towel. I wouldn’t do that unless the place was filthy.

Anonymous19653ParticipantI am white and I always wash my hands after I use the bathroom. I have never noticed before any connection between race and handwashing. I have seen women of all races leave a bathroom without washing their hands.

Cari19666ParticipantYou may be exercising a little selective perception. I–and my Caucasion friends who’ve gone to the restroom with me–are compulsive about hand-washing. Several of us are in the habit of using an extra bit of paper towel to open the door, so that we don’t have to touch the handle with clean hands. This one hardly seems race-based.

S.F.ParticipantI’m glad you posted this question! I initially thought it was the other way around, because one of my black friends in elementary school would never wash her hands after using the bathroom. My little 6-year-old self would stand there and say to her, ‘I’m not letting you out of the bathroom till you wash.’ So I had this impression that it was actually black women who don’t. I’m starting to think maybe it has nothing to do with race. It could be geography–this was on the East Coast, in Maryland. I’m on the West Coast now, and have NEVER seen a woman leave the bathroom without washing her hands.

MichaelParticipantI’ve seen this same question put to white males, and invariably the same half-joking response comes up: ‘Because we don’t pee on ours…’ It’s pretty unsanitary, to say the least, but it all tends to come back to the same thing: they were never taught to do it as a child (or rather, it was never stressed). I don’t know how widespread it is, but I’ve seen whites whom I personally like and professionally respect not wash their hands, and my estimation of them just cratered. Come on, people! This is basic hygiene!

JIM-DARCYParticipantCONSIDERING THAT I DON’T MAKE IT A HABIT TO TOUCH THINGS LIKE MONEY,DOORKNOBS,PHONES,ETC I CAN GAURANTEE YOU THAT MY PENIS IS CLEANER THAN MY HANDS.I SOMETIMES WASH MY HANDS BEFORE PEEING.NOW IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WIPING YOUR ASS THAT WOULD REQUIRE WASHING OF HANDS AFTER.

MParticipantWell I am a young black female and I wash my hands quite frequently, to the point that they are often dry and ashy. That’s why I always keep a small tube of lotion handy in my purse. I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD)while I was in middle school. Thus the reason for excessive handwashing. With that being said I couldn’t imagine using the ‘john’ and not washing my hands. So to Ms. S.F., you can throw those two stereotypes out of the window because I am black and I am a native ‘East-Coaster; a native Floridian at that. It isn’t a race or a geographic factor, it is a hygienic issue and good old home training.

CatMemberLast time I checked, there was this product called ‘waterless soap’ AKA ‘hand sanitizer’ on the market. I use that instead of soap and water. To me, that’s more convenient than hand washing in the first place. Don’t generalize and assume we’re all the same. You know what happens when you ‘ASS-U-me’.

Karen28808ParticipantThis must explain why my bi-racial grand daughter only washes one hand when leaving the rest room….

AimeeParticipantI have never noticed the difference betweeen races as to whether they wash or don’t wash their hands. When I was brought up, i was never taught to wash my hands after using the bathroom. I don’t know why because my mother was a clean woman. It was probably not until I was in high school did I notice others washing their hands. Now as an adult, I do it because it is the right thing to do, althought I think handwashing is way over done.

AmyMParticipantI have rarely seen anyone do this, and haven’t noticed their ethnicity. I usually wash my hands thoroughly, then use a paper towel to turn off the sink, then use a paper towel to open the door. It annoys me when public restrooms either don’t have paper towels or place the trash can far from the door. Be Kind, for everyone is fighting a great battle." -Plato

N. G.ParticipantI recently had blood drawn, and noticed a sign in the phlebotomist’s department exhorting the staff to use hand sanitizer in lieu of washing hands because it is more convenient, uses less water, and kills more bacteria than conventional hand washing.

emorywParticipantI imagine some women do and some don’t just like men. I would guess that some of the women who don’t wash probably don’t touch anything; in other words after “tee-teeing” they just get up and drip dry.
