To Native Americans:I see many white people going to vision quest weekends, practicing Native American religious customs-hoping to experience something enlightening or supernatural in an abbreviated time. There are many negative reactions to this. Is it a fair comparison to liken it to someone who does not read the Bible, or understand Christianity, but wants to take Communion to be part of a mystical experience? In Christianity, people would welcome you to learn about their religion, but it seems that Native Americans not only are offended by these commercial quests, but also even people wanting to legitimately learn. Is that true? What suggestion do you have for someone who thinks about going to a vision quest simply because they are seeking some guidance or truth? Would you always suggest someone who is white not to persue it through a Native American practice?
