L-HillsParticipantWhy do I hear so many women (especially those having them for the first time) describe pelvic examinations in a negative light? I have a shy friend who was depressed for two days after her first one. Why?

Mark M.ParticipantI’m a psychology major who has informally interviewed a few women of various ages on their experience and, more importantly, their feelings during and after their first pelvic exam. Perhaps as a guy I can help other guys understand, which can be difficult since we are different in the areas that matter as far as this is concerned. It boiled down to two separate items – both emotional. It seems the emotional carries far more weight than physical discomfort, though there is some of that, too. No. 1 is the ‘position.’ It appeared that this was less and less a factor as the sexual experience of the women went up – but none liked the position. Feelings ranged from ‘indecent’ to ‘slutty’ – indicating it was a blow to their self-image to be seen in such a position – despite the fact that it was for medical purposes. Secondly, none wished to share their privates with their doctors. It was a ‘loss of control,’ a situation in which outside forces forced them into a situation they did not wish to be in.
