I always refer to my country as the United States of America, or the United States for short. I have noticed that most foreigners (as well as, oddly enough, military people) are fond of calling our country simply ‘the States’. I’m sure no conscious disrespect is intended, but why is it so hard for these people to acknowledge that we are united, or rather, why is the concept so far from their minds? (Keep in mind that a civil war was fought over this.) Even the Latin name for the United States, found for instance in Catholic Church documents and abbreviated on the former Treasury seal, is ‘America Septentrionalis’, i.e., ‘North America’, not ‘Unionis Republicarum Americae’ (or something like that).
