I was wondering, seeing how homosexuals are attracted to someone of the same sex, do they get turned on by seeing themselves nude in the mirror?

Being turned on by the image of your own reflection in the mirror is not an indication that you are by any means a homosexual. Its commonly identified as Narcissism, extreme admiration of oneself. This is not limited to men or women, gay or straight. And for a straight man to be so inclined is not to suggest that he is possibly bi-sexual. He is simply narcissistic.

I think it would depend on the individual. I am not particulary turned on by my own reflection, but that may be because I am out of shape. Were I built and buffed, it may be different. But for me, the issue has always been not who I am turned on by, but who I fall in love with.

I’ve known several straight guys (body builders/athletes) who liked to pleasure themselves while looking in the mirror and admiring themselves. These same guys would give you a look of horror if you suggested they do the same thing but look at another guy. Of course, I think that’s a learned response to social pressure. Most everyone has sexually infused dreams that don’t match their day-to-day behaviors – gay men will even dream about sex with a woman from time to time. But we’re socialized to suppress those thoughts rather than be truly comfortable with ourselves as sexual beings.

I wouldn’t say I get turned on by seeing myself naked, but I can definitely tell if I’d be turned on by myself if I were someone else. Instead of thinking ‘I look really good,’ I can think ‘yeah, I’d go out with me, too!’ But it isn’t an issue only of sexual orientation — it’s an issue of narcissism. I don’t get turned on by myself, but a particularly narcissistic person (of any orientation!) probably could.

I suppose that would depend on the individual. I do remember, though, that once in a smoky nightclub, I did spot a fellow I thought was ‘my type’ across the room. He returned my gaze, moved his head when I moved mine, and I really thought I was on to something until I worked out it was a mirror. Drugs are bad, kiddies…

I am not attracted to men who look like me. I am attracted to a different body type than my own, so I don’t get aroused by looking at myself in the mirror. Sometimes I wish I did look like the men I like. Then I could satisfy myself and not have to be frustrated looking at men I can’t have!

I don’t think getting turned on to yourself when looking in the mirror is necessarily a gay or straight thing, but has more to do with narcissism or ability to appreciate your own body. Haven’t you ever looked in the mirror and thought ‘Damn, I look fine today!’? I have. I dont think it’s because I’m a dyke but because I like and love myself and am happy with how I look. There are some lesbians who have partners who look a lot like themselves, and one might guess that they are attracted to people who have similar physical qualities as themselves, but that’s as far as it goes, I think.

Oh yes, I’m very attracted to myself! I think that’s one of the best things about being queer. But not all queer folks are attracted to themselves. I suppose it depends upon whether you’re your own ‘type’ or not. It’s not all that big a deal anyway – well, it does do wonders for your body image, but I mean it’s not the same as having a sex partner. It’s really frustrating sometimes actually, having this utterly gorgeous person on the other side of the mirror and not being able to break down the glass and go to bes with each other.
