Things might be different in Germany, but where I grew up, the toys were fairly interchangable. I grew up a complete tomboy and actually found the boys’ toys more fun, but I don’t think girls’ toys are neccessarily inferior. *** I also don’t see why a girl would never want to be seen with a Game Boy. I had the first version of the Game Boy when it came out, and both boys and girls played with them. If they secretly yearn for one, satisfy that yearning — they’ll still play with it, if even in private. *** And CC, I grew up on He-Man, Thundercats and Transformers, and turned out rather normal. You?

Good for you in letting him learn a skill! He’s well on his way to being a well-balanced human being.

Girls should be ‘fixed’ if they prefer playing with boy’s toys? Was this satire, or are you serious?

Toys are obviously part of the socialization process, and I think it is important for parents to determine how they want their kids socialized. One way to teach kids at an early age that stereotypes aren’t rules we all need to live by is to give kids a variety of toys and encourage them to play with what they like, not what they stereotypes dictate.

The gender lines are started from birth…pink or blue blankets….outfits, etc.. I saw a television show on Discovery Channel that said that girls are drawn toward the dolls and tea party sets because of an instinct…and boys because of the alpha male instinct to be tough, etc…I believe this but I also believe that society had enabled this behavior.

I don’t think this is really a problem. All the girly-pink and boy-blue packaging is just a marketing tool to make the products stand out to specific genders. Whether cultural or not, girls are visually drawn to pink, boys to blue. It just affects what they notice first, not what they ultimately play with. I didn’t have progressive parents, but when I was a child, we had girl’s toys, along with Hot Wheels and ‘boy’s’ building toys. It never worried anyone, and none of my friends made fun of me for it. In fact, they enjoyed the boy’s toys as well. Now I’m an adult, and am in no way gender-confused. By the way, I have never met a young girl who’s embarrassed to own a Gameboy.

I think all little boys should wear dresses and learn to braid their hair and the proper way to use a tampon, as little girls should be given a bb gun and be taught how to shoot the neigbor’s cat and the proper way to put on a condom and piss on a tree. Because their ain’t no difference between them — is there?

Yes, this is is purely marketing. The goal of marketing/sales-person is to make you feel that you are not *same* as others and so you deserve “my product”, buy it! Using that strategy, they force you to buy two toys. One for son and other for the daughter.
