While growing up in the South I’ve often noticed that when two males attend a movie together, they often leave a seat open between them. Is this a regional practice or is it seen throughout the United States? What is the reason? I don’t remember seeing females do the same.

That seems a bit strange to me; I’ve never done that. It’s probably just a regional practice. I’m a little confused as to why they would leave a seat between them, though. The only thing that comes to mind is a fear of being considered gay, but that seems a bit ridiculous.
