To avoid responding to each of the questions and answers posted, I’m hoping to start a new thread on the subject. I think people percieve southerners to be overly resistant to social evolution. It is believed that the south is ‘holding the rest of us back’. When this is the case, the confederate flag is associated with the south’s apparent obstinance. I also think its a case of being unable to undo something already done. The swastika was once a positive symbol (a symbol of good fortune), but now it is not. And no matter how hard people try, it never will be a positive symbol to the general population again. It will always be associated with Nazis, Hitler, and Neo Nazis. I think it would be beneficial for the south to accept that the confederate flag’s symbol has been tainted, move on, and create a new one to celebrate, rather than constantly defend.

The confederate flag is equated with slavery by many blacks and northerners since the southern confederacy fought the north in the Civil War. Those who cherish the confederate flag don’t seem to accept that the confederacy lost the civil war and accept the implications of that. Just Curious
