Michael-KennedyParticipantMy understanding of these two questions is firstly that Jesus ‘descended to the dead’ for three days after his death where he preached to the souls who died before he did to allow them the opportunity to accept His love, and secondly those who haven’t had the opportunity to learn the Christian message are able to know God through their relationship to the Holy Spirit in their lives. In this way they are able to know and love God, but to a less complex degree than Christians who know God in the Trinity.

D. FusieMemberIf, according to the New Testament, the only way to heaven is through Jesus, what happened to the souls of people who lived before him, or those who have never heard of him? This is an important question for me as I am a beginning Bible student.

suzy27514ParticipantJesus never said He was the only way to heaven. He knew that wasn’t true. What was meant by that statement is: If you follow the instructions that were given by Jesus, you can reunite with God. When asked by his disciples what was the most important of all his instructions he replied: ‘Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and soul.’ Every statement attributed to Jesus in the Bible was not spoken by Jesus. You posed two very good questions concerning the statement Jesus is alledged to have made. If you are going to study the Bible, keep the same questioning attitude to arrive at what Jesus possibly meant by the statements attributed to him. The Bible has been corrupted so much, it must be taken in its essence, and that essence is the to try and develop love for God. Of course, first you have to find out who God is, and you have to look into the Vedic Literatures of India to find that out.

Dan27285ParticipantBefore Jesus, the afterlife was considered to be “Paradise,” and was commonly referred to as “Abraham’s Bosom.” Jesus mentions it when he talks about the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (not the one who was ressurected). It also says in the New Testament that when Jesus comes back for his church and takes them up into the Kingdom, he will also take all those in Paradise along for the ride.

PMBParticipantIn Romans 4:3 we are told that Abraham was justified through faith. In simple terms he was saved because he believed God, as we do. Those before Jesus, Abraham, Moses, David, etc., were saved because they believed God’s promise of a coming Messiah. We believe in God’s promise too, and that it was fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah.

stephanie-MParticipantAccording to the tradition, in order to roll their sins ahead of them yearly they were to sacrifice an animal (blood) for their antonement. That is why Jesus gave the supreme sacrifice of his blood on Calvary for all of us throughout the ages.

D. RiskoMemberYour question is so vital. What does it take for someone to get to heaven? The answer has always been faith. Since Adam and Eve every human has had to have faith to enter heaven. Faith in what or who? Faith in the message of God revealed at that time. Adam and Eve had faith in the offspring that would crush the serpents head (Gen 3:15). Abraham had faith in the promised son and this was counted unto him as righteousness (Gen 15:4-6). The message of Judaism was of the Messiah, and faith in his coming was neccesary for salvation. So it has always been faith in the message of God and that message or word was truly seen in its fullfilment when the ‘Word’ became flesh and died upon the cross. See also Romans 3:21 – 4:17

TiffaniParticipantThe love of Jesus goes backward and forward. The people that lived in Old Testament days used sacrifices. Today, the emersion baptism saves us. However, in the old days, the sacrifice of their possessions could save them. Just as Old Testament prophesies were fulfilled in the New Testament, the love of Christ going to and fro was fulfilled in the New Testament.
