The expression ‘we are what we eat’ is my immediate response to this question. What we consume generates a multitude of physical responses, including smell. Every cultural group throughout the world has a unique smell, due to their similar diets. Asian, African, white, Chinese – we all eat different foods, therefore producing a different set of toxins that are released through the pores on our bodies. When someone of a different culture does smell different, we assume that smell is bad, as our survival instincts kick in to be aware of a predator.

What your diet consists of can determine how you smell. I am in the military, and when we train in the field, we are trained to use the sense of smell often. You can smell others easily in nature if they have a different diet. I was in Japan, and the people smelled different. After about six months, the smell vanished, or wasn’t noticeable. When I returned to the United States in a year, everyone told me I smelled different. Reason: different diet!

I don’t know what planet you’re from, but here on the planet earth, I’ve smelled both black and white people after coming in from the sun. Can’t you find something better to do with your time besides worrying about how other races smell? Life is too short, and no one is going to be here on this earth forever. Black or white.

Does anyone doubt for a second that if the title of the book was Why do Black People Smell Like Wet Dogs that it would have been taken up as a cause celebre by the NAACP, CORE, SNCK, SCLC and any number of other black-oriented organizations? Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would have been up in arms calling for the banning of the book. I bought the book and found it interesting, but an extension of this web site. There is a double standard operating in this country. Black people think there is ‘yet something else’ that they are missing. Never having been ‘there,’ they don’t know that they ARE ‘there.’ There is no secret handshake in order to get the ‘white folk’ discount from the local merchant. From this point on, black folk, just like white folk, if they are going to ‘get it’ they are going to have to get up every morning, and work their butt off for it. I don’t believe you will ever see the day when all white people will like all black people, and vice versa. Disliking someone does not necessarily make one a racist. I don’t like white people for the same reasons I don’t like black people. If a person robs, lies, steal, etc., I won’t like them, regardless of the color of their skin.

One big contributor to how a person smells is the kind of food they cook. Cooking creates grease vapor that sticks to walls, clothing, furniture, everything. If a family cooks the same kind of food for years and years, the smell will eventually get into everything they own. This is why my grandmother’s house used to smell ‘fried’ before she sold it. Regarding the B.O. factor, it’s not race but income. A lot of people can’t afford air-conditioning or get nice desk jobs where they don’t sweat.

I think Bob has made some valid points. As a college-educated black woman who was raised with the same work ethic he has expressed, I feel he is right that the ‘work-their-butt-off-for-it’ attitude is the one blacks must take if we have any chance for success as a race. I also agree that the Rev. Jesse Jackson et al would be up in arms and protesting if the name of the book were different. But in fairness, Bob must acknowledge the role that institutional racism has played in hampering minority advancement and achievement. This is not an excuse, just reality. As far as Jesse Jackson et al are concerned, they do not represent the opinion of all black people; the media just makes it seem like they do. I would not protest against any book based on the title if the intent of the book was to open up dialogue in a country with all sorts of communication devices, none of which seems to be used to talk about anything of great consequence, especially regarding subjects/issues that ultimately will affect the viability of our nation as a world power in the decades ahead.

You’re right, Bob, not all blacks are going to like all whites, and vice versa, but at the very least we should be on speaking terms, and any book that facilitates this is a good book, no matter what the title is.

Black people do have a characteristic odor. Everybody stinks, but they have a particular stink. I have often been able to tell a room was full of black people before entering just by the smell in the hallway. Reportedly, there’s even a word in portuguese that specifically means ‘The smell of black people.’ I just came across this because I’ve been trying to find out a chemical basis for the ‘black person smell.’

Well, I think anybody that’s been in the sun too long is going to smell, becuase of sweat. Racewise, though, some groups may have more sweat glands than others. For instance I have definitely noticed black and whites have more of a ‘sweaty’ smell then Asians, who seem to have more of a ‘foody’ smell. It is easier for an outsider to detect the smell of another race. For instance as a black person, I feel white people have a very unique smell. Obviously other minorites seem to agree with me, with the starting caption on this forum being ‘Why do White People Smell Like Wet Dogs When they Come out of the Rain?’ This may be another reason why you feel blacks have such a strong odor.

The odor of which is so offensive to me has just emerged this year. The vast majority of black women in this city, and some black men, and even a few white women, have adopted this absolutely horrible smell of cheap perfume over an unwashed body. I do not believe that a person’s bad body odor originates from what they eat or do not eat. People must bathe. Bathing at night and not in the morning is simply laziness and bad hygiene. If you are too lazy to wash your rear end, it will stink. Using perfume mixed with shea or cocoa butter to cover up the stench will only increase the stench. And if you wear tight clothes with a smelly rear end, everyone around you will suffer. The answer is simple. Take a shower. It’s not rocket science. And whoever created the policy that to stink is politically correct needs to have their head examined.

You are absolutely right! My nose is very sensitive. I have a lot of black friends and some smell more then others but all have that distinctive smell, like sulfur or something. For long I thought that this does not apply to one of my coworkers but then I smelled her too… All of them have good hygiene, clean clothes and homes! It has to be in their genes. It is irritating at times (to me) because of the odor I start sneezing, or my nose becomes runny – allergy like. Pungent odor is a good description.
