Jesse-R30814ParticipantI’m working on a paper for my Composition class on ‘The Causes and Effects of Stereotyping in Today’s Society.’ I’d like to see what others have to say about this topic, in order to produce a more well-rounded conclusion. Please help, if interested. Thanks.

DanParticipantThere are negative and so-called positive stereotypes. I’ll use stereotypes regarding Latinos as an example. Negative stereotypes would be that we’re all drunk, overly macho, violent and lazy who go around womanizing, etc. etc. etc. Positive stereotypes would be that we can all dance Salsa like mad, are accomplished lovers, are skilled in sweet-talking and seduction, and have complete mastery over the Spanish language (I can’t speak it for nothing). The negative stereotypes are hurtful, divisive, and cause great anger. The positve stereotypes are amusing at best, thorns in our side at worst. Basically, I would like people to understand our culture at a more in-depth level, yet understand that culture alone cannot by any means wholely define every individual who is considered Latino.

Patrick-Wood19911ParticipantStereotyping has a dramatically negative influence on society today, just as it has in the past. The use of stereotypes act to delude and distort peoples’ perception. Stereotypes are derived from a desire to simplify. People find it difficult to cope with others who they don’t completely understand. Stereotyping creates character archetypes from which they can derive a simple understanding of that person. Unforunately, stereotyping creates an oversimplification of certain peoples and cultures. Ultimately, stereotyping may lead to racism and other forms of prejudice. As a reseach assistant for a diversity project for the gov’t of Ontario, I come across quite a bit of material on stereotypes in the workplace.
