JtredwheelsParticipantWhat do people of different backgrounds think is the most important aspect of one’s culture? Is it strength of family, religion, wealth or something else?

SR28449ParticipantFirst, American culture in general… The aspects I’d feel uncomfortable without are the English language and our social mores. My culture on a smaller scale (suburbia) seems to value money, new possessions, and a lucrative college degree. I feel like I’m going through the motions of my culture just because I don’t know what I’d do otherwise. On the other hand, my subculture (college students) seems to go against the grain of our suburban upbringing. I feel like all we want right now is to read good books, drink good beer, have good conversations and travel all over.

SaraMemberAs an African-American I would say family and religion are two very important factors in my culture. Also, feelings and emotions (both positive and negative) seem to play a greater role for Blacks than for Whites. I’ve noticed that generally, Whites seem more conservative, when expressing their emotions. I think Blacks are more likely to laugh, sing, cry, cuss each other out when we’re angry because experiencing that wide range of emotions makes us feel more alive.
