Rumors about the South abound. Lynchings, the Klan controlling entire regions, cross burnings, deep-seated prejudices, ‘unofficial’ segregation, county sheriffs with white sheets in their closets, etc. etc. However, I’m sure that most of it is bunk, or is no longer prevalent. My dad’s side of the family has extensive roots in the South (North Carolina, Tennessee, ancestors fighting on both sides in Civil War, etc.) and he wants to go there (as do I), yet my mom refuses. My mom is dark skinned and is of Mexican Indian stock, and she fears she will be lynched if she even sets foot across the Mason Dixon line. What is the South really and truly like today? Would my family be safe if we went there for a time? What should I tell my mom?
