SJ-LeSageParticipantHere are some possibilities: older people might be afraid of teens, or they might be annoyed by them. They might also be responding to some teen behavior of which the teen might not even be aware. Another possibility is that older people were also once teens, and sometimes we see – and react to – our own youth, instead of yours. This isn’t fair, but it is common.

jim30738ParticipantEven the ancient greeks had this problem. So don’t worry, It’s not you, your friends or the older people you know… it’s just life. Try to remember how you feel now when you grow to become an’older person’, Perhaps you can change the ongoing problem.

AshleyParticipantI am 17 years old and I think that teenagers are stereotyped! Most older or elderly people think that all teenagers are the same. That all they do is drink, do drugs, and get into trouble with the law. This is true for some but not all.

ReynaParticipantYou don’t see it now but in about 5 years you will become annoyed with teenagers. Most teenagers have the idea that they know everything and that they can’t be harmed. I know it wasn’t that long ago that I was one. I have read that when you go through puberty your brain is ‘splashed with chemicals’ and that previously taught morals and values need to be re-taught. It’s kind of like being a toddler again except you have smarter mouths and adult bodies. Please just slow down, enjoy being young. The world is all downhill form here. Money worries, babies, jobs that s*ck, driving in gridlock, bills, ….the list goes on and on. I think adults might be a little envious of teenagers lack of resposibilities. The number one gripe I hear is lack of respect for elders. What I wouldn’t do the be 17 again. Just wait until you get in the real world and people are just mean to be mean, without reason.

ExtonParticipantI don’t believe that all older people act adversely to all teenagers (although some do). I do find, however, that the manner in which an adult interacts with a teenager is largely dependant upon the context of the interaction and the manner in which the teenager interacts with the adult. In other words: when they act stupidly, they get treated stupidly. Certainly though, it doesnt occur to many teenagers that their behavior might be percieved as stupid or immature; otherwise they wouldn’t act that way. There are times, however, when it does seem that they are acting like fools; being a teenager myself, I can attest to this firsthand. Many of the times that an older person will have an opportunity to interact with teenagers, if they dont live with one or work with them, will be in public places where teenagers spend time with their friends. Unfortunately, in groups, teenagers tend to be less inhibited in their actions and their language, and thus other people tend to take annoyance or insult at their behavior. I worked at a movie theater for two years, and during that time i saw my share of dumb behavior. The following behaviors will invariably elicit negative responses from your elders: public displays of affection of any kind, loud group conversations, lewd language, smoking, and on and on. These may not seem like major offenses, but when an individual goes grocery shopping, or sees a movie, they typically are not going there to see teenagers embracing their sexuality and having loud, riotous ‘good times,’ and thus people get annoyed or upset, and act accordingly.
