DanielleParticipantShould a parent condone their teen to get on birth control, use condoms, basically even talk to them about sex or is that introducing them to it and saying it is OK?

DebbieHParticipantAs a parent I have always been very open with my 19-year-old son about sex. We started addressing the situation after he watched the famous sex-ed video in sixth grade. He felt comfortable asking questions and let me know when he had heard enough (until next time). I know that I cannot prevent it from happening, but at least I know he will be smart about it and use protection. Any parent who condones their teen not using birth control is being naive.

DotParticipantTeens know what sex is and most have had it by age 15. Parents who think they can forestall the knowledge by not talking about it are just dooming their kids to early, unwanted pregnancies and STDs. Sarah Palin, anyone? The best way to keep kids virginal is to be honest with them about sex and talk about it early, 10, not 16. By the time your kid’s in high school it’s too late to begin the dialogue.

ShirleyAveryParticipantI’m glad you asked. With so many STDs it’s important to give the teens accurate information in a non-judgmental way. At the same time, you are perfectly within bounds by telling them (not in a preachy way) your feelings about teen sexual behavior. They’ll respect you more if you are honest and not preachy. They’ll do what they want anyway, so it’s better to give them enough info to be as safe as possible. Just Curious
