I have been a waitress for about 4 years now, and it is not uncommon to wait on a table of foreigners with difficulties in speaking english. I will occasionally talk louder and slower in hopes that they can understand my english better. After doing this for awhile I have heard that people are disrespected by it, I am only doing it for their benefit. I know that if I was in the situation I would like someone to do that for me. How should I treat the situation, if I don’t want to offend anyone?

Whatever you do, don’t speak louder – that just makes you look stupid. And don’t speak a whole lot slower, just speak “EASIER”. Don’t act like you’re talking to a three year old, but don’t use complicated grammar either. Imagine your level of proficiency in a foreign language and how hard it would be. I’ve seen so many cashiers at my job speaking to foreign customers in their same, waytoofast, too much slang and no context English and it only leads to more confusion.
