M.R.ParticipantHelp. To be blunt, I have a problem with picking my nose and eating … that. I developed this habit as a child and did it in the open until I reached high school (though I thought I hid it well with my hand). Now I’m an adult, I’ve graduated from college and am married, but I still do it. It seems to give me comfort when I’m bored, depressed, etc. Does any adult have this problem, or, more importantly, has any adult been successful in breaking the habit? I really would prefer to stop.

Rose L.MemberThis may sound strange, but have you talked to your general practitioner or a psychiatrist? A lot of people have compulsive behaviors they perform in response to stress, such as pulling out hair, picking at the skin, burning oneself and so on. Some of the newer anti-depressants, such as Zoloft and related medications, have been successfully used to treat compulsive behaviors. Ask your doctor about it.

Rocky29602ParticipantI agree with the previous statement, but I don’t think it’s serious enough for medications. Maybe the solution is as simple as wearing gloves. Gloves will prevent you from sticking your finger up you nose and you’ll be more conscious of your behavior.

MichaelParticipantI do it. It’s a gross habit, but it doesn’t really hurt anything, and I don’t do it in public places.
