A Nigerian woman who got pregnant out of wedlock was recently sentenced to death by stoning by an Islamic court in Nigeria. The government of Nigeria stated the punishment will not take place because the laws of the state supercede the law of the Islamic court that pronounced the sentence on the woman. Much has been made of the case in the media, and some contestants in the 2002 Miss World pageant have threatened to boycott the competition, which is to be held in Abuja, Nigeria. I think stoning as punishment for a pregnancy out of wedlock is outrageous, but why is this woman the only one under condemnation by Islamic law? What’s to be said of the man who impregnated her? And don’t tell me the father can’t be identified. DNA identification is readily available and highly accurate.

First, this law should not be applied in this case according to Islamic law for many technicalities. Islamic law automatically negates many decrees for poor, unjust societies – like most modern Muslim societies. If the law were applicable, it should be carried out on both the man and the woman. The Koran states explicitly that the adulterer and adulteress get equal punishment (by the way, I think the punishment is beating, not stoning). If the man is intentionally ignored, this is due to societal factors, not Islam.

Ive never read the Quran but Muslims, like Christains and Jews are all ‘Of The Book’ so my guess is the Quran has verses similar to the Old Testament in the beginning. The Islamic court is probably more Orthodox and takes the Quran more literally. Bella read Deuteronomy in your Christian Bible, esp. chapter 22. Nearly every sin you can think of God commands all townspeople to stone the perpatrator(s) at the front of their Father’s home (yes, even pregnency out of wedlock). ‘In this way will you get rid of this evil,’ the verses always end. I know many say the New Testament is supposed to change all that, but many Christains dont belive that and say the Old Testament is the word of God and must be taken literally. So the Islamic court is pretty fundamental, but it certainly isnt a Muslim thing.

Karim, with all due respect, how just is this law when in both instances (beating or stoning) the life of the innocent unborn child is overlooked? Beating can cause injury and/or death to the child, while stoning would surely kill it. Therefore, it seems hypocritical for Muslims to denounce abortion but at the same time uphold such practices.

Yes, the child (a girl) has already been born. It is my opinion that this is yet another example of the United States rushing in to impose our morals on other countries. Do you see officials from the middle east trying to cut off the hands of those who steal in our country? Anyone from Singapore trying to cane our citizens for crimes commited in our country because they disagree with our justice system? This woman was born in Nigeria, raised with Muslim values, and was aware of the penalties for having sex out of marriage. It is not our job to change their government. We are not the moral police whose duty it is to enforce our own ideas about crime and punishment on those with very different belief systems. The greatest irony is that it is our country with the highest crime rates in the world. Changing other countries’ laws to reflect ours would undoubetdly encourage criminal behavior that mirrors ours since the consequences are so lenient in comparision.

i think it’s very wrong for only the woman to be treated like this especially in this day and age. i’m all for keeping traditions alive but some of them need to go. to stone a woman for being pregnant out of wedlock is barbaric and should’ve gone out back several centuries ago. it’s not fair that for the most part in so many places still women are screwed over for being women… hello! pregnancy is a two persomn thing so what happens to the guys?
