MaileParticipantWe get a lot of Japanese-from-Japan tourists here in Hawaii, and something puzzles me. Japanese people appear to love a lot of American culture. I have friends who are very Caucasian-looking who have made lots of money modeling in Japanese fashion magazines. Why hasn’t orthodontia become popular in Japan? You see a beautifully dressed, immaculately made-up young Japanese woman. She opens her mouth and has the worst snaggle teeth you’ve ever seen. Their teeth are clean, just really crooked. Asian people in general seem to have teeth that are more crooked than other people’s teeth. Are their mouths just too small for the number of teeth they have? Or is it that Americans are obsessed with teeth?

Anna23814ParticipantAs I recall, crooked teeth used to be very common among showbiz stars in Japan; I guess they find that attractive somehow. But judging from the recent popular idols, they seem to have grown out of that obsession. I’m not Japanese, so maybe this isn’t the best answer you can get.

Female21784ParticipantI am always amazed at the condition of the teeth of people from certain cultures, especially Britain and Japan. You mentioned Japan, I assume because you are from Hawaii and this is a popular tourist destination and home for many Japanese people. Unfortunately, sometimes an Asian guy is really cute, and he finally smiles and sends us running to the hills!

LauriParticipantI wish I could recall specifics, but I heard or read somewhere that this is a cultural thing. There seems to be some connection with the Shinto/Buddhist thing to do with one’s soul, and teeth are somehow connected. To alter your teeth does some kind of weird spiritual harm. I wish I could provide facts and sources, but I can’t. It just so happened that this subject came up in conversation tonight and I was hunting through Google to see if I could make some connection. I hope I can track the answer down. I could be way off the beam, here, but I think I might be at least partially correct.

ScottParticipantOn the contrary, most of the Asian women/men I have seen have very beautiful teeth and most of them are not crooked. The prettiest oriental teeth I have seen is people from Hawaii….wow!
