AmberParticipantWhy do activists and liberals opposed to corporate America smoke? These companies are the most powerful in the world and are contributing to the major problem of inequality in the world. They exploit other countries’ labor and produce a product that is unhealthy. How can anyone, especially activists, rationalize buying this product from big corporate power?

SR28446ParticipantI’m a hardcore vegetarian, talk smack about ‘evil corporations,’ voted for Nader, and smoke a pack of Camels a day. How’d it turn out that way? I started smoking at fifteen. The hippie ideals didn’t come until a few years later when I’d already become a feening, coughing slave to cigarettes.

SR28443ParticipantI started smoking at age 15; my liberal ideas didn’t fully develop until later. Addiction is a great source of rationalization…I don’t approve of tobacco companies but I’m just not ready to give up cigarettes. It can be difficult to boycott everything from shady/inhumane corporations (and there are a lot of them) so I pick and choose.

CJMemberSadly, I love to smoke. And if I could buy quality cigarettes at a reasonable price from someone besides the large corporations, I probably would. But I can’t. The way I look at it is though I am putting money in the pockets of the corporation, the exorbitant taxes I pay every time I buy a pack are funding education and other useful causes.
