Do women really play golf slower than men? I’ve always heard that and I’ve been behind some slow women players on the golf course. But I’ve also been behind some slow men. But since so many more men than women play golf, maybe the perception is skewed.’

I think women tend to see a round of golf as a social occasion, and might talk among themselves more than men. But that doesn’t mean they’re slower when it comes to actually getting to their ball and hitting the shots.

There’s a perception that women are slow but I think it’s more valid to say that beginning players of any gender take more time. I’ve played behind good women players, and they move just as fast as good male players.

Here on the private courses women do not play golf slower than men. Especially those in organized leagues. On public courses they are more likely to play slower than men because of their lower skill levels and the fact that many of them hit a shorter ball. I think more men learn golf when they are youths, so you don’t see slow adult men out there as much as slow adult women, more of whom may be beginners. Yet many women on public courses do play as fast as men. On our private courses we have rangers who keep us moving if we are playing slow, be it men or women.

Women don’t play any slower than the men here. They seem to be more sensitive about their speed of play, and seem to know how to play ‘ready golf.’ I played behind three women who walked the course and we could hardly keep up with them. I think there are just a lot of grumpy old men who just have it in there heads that it is a man’s game and that women don’t belong on the golf course.

They’re slower because they have a lot of conversation while they’re playing.

Generalizing men vs. women golfers is probably inaccurate, because skill level plays a part in how fast or slow a golfer plays. Beginners are usually slower golfers because they take more strokes. Although women don’t hit the ball as far as the men do, they also don’t hit as far OFF the fairway. Beginning men golfers spend a lot of time looking for their drives in the rough. I’d guess that low-skill women and men play at about the same speed. The women who play in my golf league (in Arizona) are all quite fast golfers. If the course sends a foursome of men off in front of us, the men usually hold us up. It has been my experience that most men are quite slow on the greens. They putt as though they were in a PGA tournament and many dollars were riding on the outcome. Women don’t do that. Perhaps the men watch too much golf on TV!

My wife doesn’t watch where her ball is hit, can’t remember what shot she is hitting and can’t understand how to square herself to the target. She is also intimidated when she has golfers behind her. So she ends up taking more shots and more time. The three guys I used to golf with died. My wife says she will spend less time in Purgatory for time spent on the golf course. But I still love her!
