My niece, Rachel, has a Caucasian mother and African-American father. The parents were not together when she was born, so the father wasn’t able to help choose her name. When she found out about her new granddaughter, the African-American grandmother said that ‘Rachel’ is a ‘slave name’ and that she would give Rachel a different name to call her when visiting her paternal relatives. What’s wrong with this name? Why did they automatically decide it was a ‘slave name’?
