AndrewParticipantA white-dominated Congress, city government, state legislature, if given the opportunity to have separate facilities for whites and others will never give equal resources to the non-white institutions. The evidence is easy to find if you look around. In cases where de facto separate institutions exist, compare whether black neighborhoods get their trash picked up as often, whether their roads are paved as often, whether their schools are funded as generously, etc. Minority neighborhoods and institutions get the short end of the stick even now, when ‘separate but equal’ is supposedly not the law. So imagine how much worse it would be if this type of pseudo-benign apartheid existed. And as for the idea that ‘most’ people of one race dislike another, I’d question the validity of that, as well.

Mack-DParticipantIf we agree that most (not all) whites don’t like blacks, and most (not all) blacks don’t like whites, wouldn’t separate but equal work for everyone, if things were truly set up that way?

TR24809ParticipantFirst, I think your assumption that most whites don’t like blacks and vice-versa is incorrect. Second, everyone would miss out on friendships and opportunities to learn. I live in a very diverse area and have friends of many races. We all learn a lot from each other. I would miss every one of them very much if we had to go to different schools based simply on the color of our skin. With segregation, everybody loses.

Lucy HParticipantFirst, I don’t believe that most whites don’t like blacks, or that most blacks don’t like whites. I do think that people have a lack of understanding about other races. This lack of understanding comes from minimal contact and interaction between people of different groups, which ultimately leads to ignorance and fear. Further separating ethnic groups will increase the ignorance and fear, which is detrimental to our counrty as a whole. Besides, what about everybody else? There are many people in this counrty besides black people and white people. We have Latinos, Asians, American Indians, Asian Indians, and Pacific Islanders, to name a few. Where would all of these people belong in a separate-but-equal society? If all people of color were separated from white people, then we would be right back where we were a couple decades ago. Separate but equal didn’t work then; why would it work now?
