I am limited in funds, just living on insurance. I’ll tell you about my day: I wake at 10 but just lay there until 12. Then I come out to the webtv and read my mail and surf the net for a couple hours. I make a trip to the hamburger stand around the corner and am usually there or walking for an hour. Then I surf the net for another 2 or 3 hours and make a trip to the cafeteria, where I spend 1 1/2 hours. Then come back home to the radio, TV and the Internet until midnight. Where does the day go?

First of all I would like to say that I am quite impressed with the questioner C.P., in Canada. I find this to be a very forward thinking person to be concerned about what people in retirement do. This from someone who is at the tender age of 21. Well to tell you the truth – sometimes I don’t know WHAT I do. I’m not rich – just comfortable. I’m not the volunteering type, although admire and respect those who do. I’m not a club joiner. I spend time with a little gardening (and I do mean little), shopping, meeting with friends (who still work) maybe a couple times a month. Vist my kids and grandkids for a weekend or a week here and there. Days fly by – but I don’t do that much. Would like to do more but don’t know what…

I feel as long as you’re happy, that is all that matters. I’m 25 and wonder sometimes what to do. Why am I alone and feeling dispair? But it happens. Maybe I grew up too fast and feel like my life is over. I married young and divorced early. I used to feel depressed, and sometimes I still do, but I realize I’m happy. I still go on because I have a beautiful daughter who needs me. I made those life choices. I woke up one day and said life is beautiful, no matter what you do. As long as you’re not on drugs and have your health and strength, it’s all good. You could be depending on someone to cook, clean or even type this letter. We just don’t know how lucky we are. And to think we complain. So whether you spend hours surfing the Internet or just sitting and watching TV, that is your choice. In other words, just be glad you can.

I am reading your question and stare in wonderment. Your day goes nowhere. You seem rather intelligent, but are you in the throes of depression? There are all kinds of things you can do. All kinds of organizations would love to have you help them. Be a mentor to a kid who doesn’t know how to use the computer. Volunteer at a hospital. Big a Big Brother. Show how you can cope with your epilepsy and still not only give to yourself but to others in dealing with this awful illness. The whole world is waiting, and you are just sitting around and not using your talents. Everyone has something valuable to contibute. You do, too. I’m 49, and I’ll be darned if I sit around and do nothing. There is a cool quote from the movie ‘Auntie Mame’: “As close as I can … Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving!”

I am deaf, and it sure doesn’t stop me. No, it’s not as harsh as what you deal with. I acknowledge that. But the world awaits your wisdom. Give of yourself and you’ll find a much richer life than you have.

A great deal of time is spend dealing with Medicare, suppliment insurances, health care providers, physical therapists, drug and orthodic supplier. As you grow older there is a greater probability of health problems, and navigating health care is confusing and time consuming. And while the retired have the small rate of poverty, many do not have money or the health to travel.

I do volunteer work, attend women’s support meetings twice a week, I write theatre reviews for a local radio station, do freelance writing from my home, go dancing 1-3 times a week, go to doctors & dentists more often than I did when young. I also enjoy DVDs, reading and sex (not necessarily in that order). I exercise at CURVES 3-4 times a week. I have the freedom and flexibility to do more of what I want, though not enough money to do as much traveling and dance lessons as I’d like. NO, I don’t have much money, but everything in life is a trade-off and I prefer the freedom & flexibility. Just Curious
