AlfieeParticipantI know this question has been asked a million times, but it just happened to me this week and I’m still confused. Why is it so hard for many Whites/European Americans to just acknowledge the fact that racism exists? I had a very cordial, yet frustrating discussion with an older white woman this week who refused to acknowledge that professors are treated differently by students based on race. I was trying to explain that students are often more disrespectful and rude toward me, an African American woman, than they are toward my white male and female counterparts. I also shared with her that my colleagues who are Chicano/a, Latino/a, American Indian and Asian tell me that they are often disrespected too. She just flatly refused to believe it and gave me every explanation under the sun for whay I was wrong. Can someone please help me understand why it is so difficult for some whites to recognize that racism is real?
