Pete S.ParticipantInteresting question, Russell. Perhaps there is a body of research on this topic that would provide you with a more direct answer. My opinion is that race is not a factor in the type of or tendency toward violence, either in general or specifically. Nutty people, like ice cream, come in all different flavors. We can see people from all different walks of life and different races engaging in different kinds of violence. Not all whites are mass murderers, not all blacks or Mexicans are gang-bangers or drug runners. Each of us make choices based upon a variety of factors of which education, socioeconomic scale and environment are certainly factors.

dewayneParticipantThis not a direct answer to your question; but as Black Americans we often ponder why all the mass murders are White persons.

Russell D.MemberEvery time you watch the news there is some sort of violence going on somewhere, whether it is black-on-black or white-on-white or black-on-white, etc. My question is, does violence have anything to do with race as far as white people being mass murders, blacks and Mexicans being gang-bangers, etc.?

ACC24019ParticipantTo be blunt, not a damn thing. To start with, “race” is a fraudulent concept which has been discredited among social scientists for at least 30 years. It has been seriously questioned as inconsistent, illogical, and having no objective evidence to back it up for more than 80 years, starting with the famed anthropologist Franz Boas. Secondly, there are counter-examples to the ones you gave of crime. Some serial and mass murderers are not white. The most prolific murderer in history was an East Indian, the leader of the Thuggee cult in the 18th century. The first gangs in the United States were not black or Latino. They were Irish, German, Dutch, and other “white ethnics” going back to at least the 1830s. But the respective culture of the criminal can play a role in how and why they commit crimes. The most obvious way is America’s love of guns and violence being taught as an acceptable way to solve your problems.

JimParticipantYes, there are subtle differences in racial groups, and the crimes they commit reflect this difference. You can take into account the fact that no race in America is pure and conclude that the differences would be even greater if there were such a thing as pure race, but whites are the greatest serial murderers and white-collar criminals. You can blame circumstances on the white-collar crime, but serial murder must be viewed differently. Similarly, blacks account for more than 50 percent of all violent crimes in the United States and are only 12 percent of the population, and worldwide, the same statistical anomalies recur. With so many various cultural situations all producing the same results, a certain conclusion is inevitable – and so is a certain silence on the very touchy subject.

ACC24025ParticipantTo say the subject is touchy is an understatement. The inevitable conclusion to what you say is that people are geneticly predisposed to certain crimes. That’s something that insults and slanders just about everybody, labelling blacks as ‘naturally’ violent criminals and whites as closet psychos or inherently greedy. Fortunately the statistics you base this wild claim on are nothing but junk science designed to justify prejudice, and have been consistently proven to be junk. There are two widely used sets of statistics on crime in the US, from the Justice Dept. and the FBI. The FBI’s measure the number of arrests. Based on their’s, blacks make up half of those arrested. Justice’s come from SURVEYS of crime victims, which are far more reliable. They show that @2/3 of all violent criminals are WHITE, believe it or not. So why do the media, politicians, and police continue to cite the misleading sets? It should be pretty obvious, they want to justify or make excuses for some pretty obviously racist treatment of nonwhites. As far as this also being true worldwide, that has some obvious fallacies too. Most countries in the Third World don’t have reliable resources to gather data. The definition of ‘white’ and ‘black’ changes from country to country. In Latin America you can become ‘more white’ by being wealthy, so the soccer star Pele is white in his home country, but black in the US. Finally, other countries, say in Europe, may be making the same distorted reasoning you are, that racist police treatment of nonwhites ‘proves’ nonwhites are more criminal.

Maria22225ParticipantI think Jim is wrong because 50 percent of the criminals on death row are white. I am not saying that white people are the top of the crimes but blacks are not either. And race is something learned from the culture it does not make you a bad person just because you are a different color.
