Kelly26579ParticipantWhy do some people find it difficult to believe that a minority can be wealthy and belong to certain organizations? I have met people who are shocked to find out that I play tennis at my club, because to them, the club is ‘very WASPy’ (which isn’t exactly true). My family and I have been connected to that place since I was in elementary school, and I don’t find that I’m out of place there at all.

NajParticipantI guess being from Canada, (correct me if I’m wrong), it may not be so ingrained in you culture. In American the typical preppy, upper class image is white. These institutions, including country clubs, private prep schools, yacht clubs, etc., are usually 99% white. Whether this is wrong or unfair is irrelevant but it is pretty accurate. I play tennis at my club and I have a nice sized boat which is considered to be a yacht and I attend a relatively prestigious but comparatively diverse prep school. Let me tell you that me and my family, (in reference to our race/ethnicity), do stick out quite a bit. Some people might not like it but we have just as much money, class and status as the next person. And as long as you feel comfortable being who you are then I say fugghedaboutit because people are going to think what they want regardless of the apparent truths.

JWParticipantWell this probably has something to do with how things were historically. There probably weren’t that many Asians playing tennis at your club. Just like people are surprised with Asians play basketball, a ‘Black’ sport. Could you imagine a Black Nascar driver? So I guess when people are raised with set races for set things, such as blacks play basketball they are just surprised when presented something out of their percieved norm.

LarryMemberThere was a time when many clubs and organizations were closed to anything but whites but that time has passed for the most part, but many minorities won’t believe you when you tell them so. I’m sure I will be castigated by one minority or another over my answer, saying that it just ain’t so but that’s the facts of life these days. The times have changed for the better. Thank God.
