Making fun of someone else, regardless of physical ability is never appropriate, IMO. However, humor *can* be used to start a conversation. Example: in college, a person in one of those motorized scooters could not open the door to the library, because she couldn’t get a grip without backing up. No one would offer any assistance. So, I said to her, ‘Do you have a license for this?’ She laughed and mentioned she just got the ride yesterday. I opened the door for her. Just treat them like a regular person. I worked in the registration office, where a Master’s degree candidate was signing up for classes; he had cereberal palsy and was confined to a wheelchair and couldn’t speak well. I talked directly to him and asked what classes he wanted. His aide thanked me profusely; I said, ‘Cripes! He’s the one getting all A’s in his classes…I figure he can speak for himself!’ Also, sometimes you can get yourself in trouble…take my husband, for example. He is 6’2, 210 lbs, a Senior Scientist at a major computer company, and has cerebal palsy, so he walks with a limp. If someone is dumb enough to comment on the ‘sped,’ they will have a face-to-face meeting with the pavement!
