Asians tend to smile a whole lot less than Americans (to strangers)..I learned in my sociology class that within the American culture, people seem very outgoing and friendly toward other people (‘Hi..how are you..etc..etc..) but it’s difficult to form deep relationships with them..many Asians are aware of this tendency which is a contrast to their view of being ‘nice’ to people..I’m also agreeing to someone’s post that many Asians do not seem to be friendly towards others (Americans) because of ‘fear of discrimination’..
