To parents: What do you think of ‘puppy love’ among teenagers?

‘Puppy Love’ is a term used to describe affection between boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. Any age above 14, I would call the show of affection just that, a show of affection or the start of a relationship (serious or otherwise). My younger two children, 13 and 18, have had their share of involvements. I trust them to do the right thing when they’re out with girls. We’ve talked about this in depth, and they understand their responsibilities. I don’t think they should get serious about anyone, because they have their whole life ahead of them. I feel they need to get experience about relationships on all levels. Sex should come later. Not necessarily after they are married, but when they’re old enough to understand the power of sex.

Puppy love is a healthy way to explore how to deal with developing emotional depth and to weather through loss and refusal. Growth is important. How we learn to deal with growth is at least as important as how we deal with that ‘one true love’ when we decide they’re the ‘one.’ An understanding adult (parent) is very important in helping an adolescent cope with an unrequited love or learning to bridle their emotions and the causitive hormones in a mature manner. Actions produce results. No 14-year-old wants a product to be waking them up for 2 a.m. feedings…

I am not a parent, but take it from one who has been through it and knows: ‘puppy love’ is the most intense love you will ever feel. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that it’s not real love, because it is. Having said that, a young man or woman in their mid-teens is not in circumstances where it can become anything permanent, unless of course it lasts with the same person for several years. I do not think there is a thing in the world wrong with ‘marrying your high school sweetheart,’ though most of us aren’t blessed with that privilege.
