Ever since I was 14, I’ve been firmly committed to not having children. I’m 22 and married now, and people still question me about it. I’m getting sick of it! I am very passionate about my career, and I know that children would only get in the way. Why do people see something wrong with this choice? Why can’t I just be a childless, career-driven ‘modern woman’ without being constantly told, ‘Oh, dearie, you’ll change your mind.’ Anyone have any smart remarks that will shut people up when they ask (or worse, assume) about when my husband and I will have kids?

just tell them you can’t bear children. Let them ASSUME you mean you can’t gestate the buggers instead of meaning you can’t bear to be around them. Most Nosy Parkers look shocked and embarrassed. Which I take quiet amusement in.

Thankfully women are no longer forced to choose between having a career and a personal life. But if you’re looking for appropriate responses to people RUDE enough to interrogate you about reproduction, how about, “it’s none of your business”, or more accurately, “I’m a 22 year-old, only recently legal to vote near child myself and it would irresponsible for me to breed until I’m mature enough to see the value of it, which I do not at present”.
