There is a high percentage of all people who were molested as children. Dorothy Allison makes two good points: One, if rape and sexual abuse were causes for lesbianism, there would be a whole lot more lesbians, and, two, if we really believe that lesbianism is bad and that cruel men cause lesbianism, why aren’t we more concerned about men mistreating their daughters? The fact is that childhood abuse is a problem across the board, and while there may be a (very) few cases in which it is the “cause” of homosexuality, it is more likely that sexual orientation is inherent.

I can’t speak for female homosexuals, but since most molesters are heterosexual, it would seem statistically less likely for boys to be sexually abused than girls. Linking sexual abuse with homosexuality is part of the pattern of disinformation used by the so-called “ex-gay ministries” – along with the old distant father/overbearing mother theory – all of which have been debunked by legitimate authorities. Gay children and teens are far more likely to face physical and mental abuse and harrassment – from peers and even parents – often in the name of Christian love.

A friend who works in the courts building dealing with cases of pedophiles says the majority of sexual offenders of children are heterosexuals. He said the men pick out the child not because of the child’s gender, but because they’re defenseless and a child. So pedophilia is all about the victim being a child, not about the assailant’s sexual orientation.
