StacyParticipantTo people of various backgrounds: Have you ever had any bad experiences in your life because of your race or ethnicity? If you have, how did that affect you? Did it change your life in any way or make you view anyone or anything differently?

SR28465ParticipantMy boyfriend of two years didn’t want to invite me to his siter’s wedding last fall because I hadn’t met his extended family yet, and he was afraid his Chicano uncles would give him a hard time about having a white girlfriend. Broke my heart and infuriated me. After I gave him a week to think about things he realized the issue is with his own identity (apparently he’d recently been called a ‘coconut’ for not speaking Spanish fluently) and not me. I hope that’s true and that this doesn’t resurface–still, I feel it lurking in the background even though we don’t talk about it anymore.
