If, as it is written in the Bible, God sees the end from the beginning, then what possibly can be changed by prayer? Isn’t prayer an assumption the God has made a mistake and needs to change the future (which has already happened as far as God is concerned)? Does God really make mistakes?

I see it like this: God is outside of time, and the beginning, middle and end are already known to him. Let’s say you are in real trouble, and pray that an event will turn out in a certain way. You know that the decision has already been made and the message is on its way to you. Is it of any use to pray? I believe it is. The decision that was made could have been based in part on the prayer that God knew you would make as the mailman walked to your door.

From what I understand of Christianity, the end goal of God is to have a personal relationship with humans. Communication, specifically here, prayer, is a means of achieving that. God makes no mistakes, but He has chosen to base his decisions on our motivations, lifestyle, what we ask of him, etc. In other words, God is consistent but will make differing choices as we change. Second, you must draw a distinction between God’s knowledge and the excercising of his own volition. Thus, God may know what all men will someday do, but only because he can be a observer throughout all time of men acting out their volition.

Prayer is a time to communicate with God, not in order to change things. God wants to be in a relationship with us and wants us to tell him what we feel and ask for things we need. That doesn’t mean that his plans change to give us what we want, it means that he will answer it in the way He thinks is best for us.

To Ronald V. A man on a tall building could stop an immenint car crash…how, by calling his mom and telling her you’re about to see one? By calling the police and telling them, hey there’s gonna be a car crash? That wouldn’t stop the crash, which is what you said.
