Ronald V.MemberCan someone tell me why pornography is such an issue? The marketplace determines the viability of a product. If people will not buy a product, it will disappear from store shelves. If there are millions of people against pornography, isn’t there enough market “unsupport” to unshelve pornographic magazines, etc.?

A.C.C.ParticipantI see two reasons: 1) Many of those people are hypocrites, obviously. One out of three women and two out of three men like to look at pornography/erotic material. But American culture is schizophrenic about sex, both fascinated by it and ashamed of it at the same time. So many people pull a Jimmy Swaggart, complaining about “sin” in public while indulging in it privately. 2) Language. People, especially many feminists, confuse gender discrimination with sexuality.

PW30317ParticipantThe ‘unsupport’ you talk about has no effect on the demand/supply issue if you are viewing this simply as a market issue. Even if 1-10% of people buy porn, that’s still a large enough demand that a supply is profitable. The other reason is that many people publically are against porn, but use it in private.
