nichole19998Participantlook, some people are sheltered, some people aren’t sheltered, strangely enough, money has little to do with that. there is no difference between the classes. we all die in the end, right? the whole concept of being ‘real’ spawned from the poor and working class in an attempt to maintain some kind of pride, justify their existances and give their children something to go on. and, sadly, it’s why there will always be a ‘poor’ class of people because many generations later, this has transformed into a value that people believe strongly in.

Sarah28420ParticipantI am middle class and think poorer people are more brave than the middle class. They know what it’s like to be tight on money and not have lights that work, or cant pay their bills and know what it’s like to wear their brother’s or sisters old clothes and shop at a used clothes store for clothes to start school. I missed out on having candles in the house and call it a candle party when they cant pay the electric bill and go to the park a lot instead of a movie because they cant afford a movie. We cant ever understand what their lives are like, and they couldnt ever dream of our lives.

J-French21274ParticipantTo me, compassion and a grip on reality have little to do with economics status. Poor people can resent rich people, or be their friend. Rich people can look down on poor people, or be their friend. How you will view the world and other people is a personal choice that is separate from economic status. Compassion, consideration, and the willingness to see the world from others’ points of view are what make us real and genuine people, not wealth or even life experience.

Colleen19816ParticipantI work in an upscale pre-school where 90 percent of the parents are very wealthy. The kids in my class may have every toy they could want – one gets any toy she wants every Friday if she gets positive behavior reports from me – but they don’t have the love. Don’t misunderstand, their parents love them, but they are so busy making sure they have enough money to ‘prove’ their love that they forget to just spend time with their kids. My kids are so attention-hungry that they have serious behavior problems. Most of my class already has problems with perfectionism. Everything they do has to be just right. They always have to be cute, and failure is not acceptable. I have one little girl (age 3) who just melts down if something she’s drawn doesn’t come out just right. Money doesn’t shelter. When used properly, it can help give a child a good start. But if it’s abused, having money can provide a whole new set of real problems. These problems are just trivialized because of our perceptions of rich people: ‘Oh, poor little rich baby.’

AimParticipantWe all bleed when cut, though I have to admit I am guilty of making the same jab. I used to think Southern Californian people (wealthier than us NorCals) were too obsessed with themselves and material possessions. However, once I spent some time getting to know the people I liked them just the same.

Warren EckelsMemberAnecdotally, there are stories of ‘rich kids slumming’ which I cannot verify. I don’t think poor people are less ‘real’ than others, but neither do I think they are more ‘real’. However, some middle-class people were poor, and while not eager to return to poverty, they credit it for the better sides of their nature or keeping them out of credit-card debt. I think poor people tend to experience more jarring and unpleasant things than the rest of us, and perhaps ‘the school of hard knocks’ imparts valuable lessons. Too often, though, its students never graduate.
