Why do African-American women pick up their babies by one arm? Are they aware they can dislocate the shoulder manhandling the child in this way?

Can you honestly say that you have never seen white women pick up their babies by one arm? I hate anyone picking up a young child like that and I do not pay attention to the race of the offender. I am a young black female and my mother has always said the same thing – that she hates to see that, too. Anytime I ever see a cute baby I wanted to hold, I always pick he or she by both arms and grab underneath as the proper way to do it.

I’ve seen women of many different cultures do this, especially if they’re trying to care for more than one child at a time. I am guilty of doing this quite often. I have 20-month-old triplet cousins, and when Im caring for them and two of the three want to be picked up and you’re trying to get things done I just grab them and swing them up on my hip. I’ve never done it to an infant because you can hurt them, but toddlers are more ‘durable’. It’s a little harder to hurt them but everyone should use caution when doing something like this. So it’s not just a black thing – mothers and care givers of all races are guilty of this.

In case you haven’t noticed ( and it seems you haven’t) not all black females hold their babies like this. The ones you’ve seen doing this are usually the single, often very young, untrained ‘baby’s mommas’ who are either too ignorant of proper child care or too stuborn to learn. By the way, I’ve seen this done by single mothers, who include, but are not limited to, black AND white single mothers.

I work in a public place in an inner city and I, too, see a lot of parents swinging their kids up with one arm. I’d also like to know why they cover babies’ faces with a blanket. This is in hot weather or cold. It’s very ignorant and the child is usually uncomfortable.

Well, you cover a child’s face in summer because of the sun and flying insects. You usually use a lightweight blanket. In the winter you cover the child’s face because of the cold, rain, snow, etc.
